The size of the jig head should be chosen such that the natural shape of the jig is retained and the hook comes out at the top of the jig. The general rule is as follows: Jig size 6–7 cm -> jig head size 2–1/0; jig size 8–9 cm -> jig head size 1/0–3/0; jig size 10–15 cm -> jig head size 3/0. The weight of the jig head depends on the conditions as well as the depth of your target fish. The colder the water, the more likely you are to get good results with slower movement, i.e., a lighter jig head. In turn, heavier jig heads, i.e., faster-moving jigs, are generally more effective in warmer water. You should also account for the flow of the water. A heavier jig head may also come in handy in shallower areas if the water is moving. The line thickness is also significant when jigging; if you use a thicker line, its surface area becomes larger and it is more prone to wind effect, which means that the jig will be more buoyant in the water and sink slowly. Thus, you should try different weights to find what works at any given time. Maintaining a good feel of the jig is key.
Below you will find an indicative chart for choosing the weight of your jig head.
