“As a child, I fell in love with the beauty of the ruby-eyed roach and the platinum-scaled bleak. We caught them and we ate them. The brilliant details of the fish became very familiar to me. My free time was spent in nature, reading fish field guides next to bodies of water. The fish illustrations of Sundman and von Wrights swam into my dreams. Our kitchen wall was adorned by a painting of a salmon by Erik Bruun. At the time, my own forays into drawing fish did not produce significant results.

Later, following my studies in the field and professional work, I was inspired to combine my passions and started to produce fish illustrations. After a couple of years of practice and my first exhibition, I decided to take the next step and began my journey to paint of Finnish fish species into a new book titled Suomen kalat. My products are the results of this process. They were made to speak of the varied beauty of our underwater nature and to educate future generations to take care of our unique and valuable waters. My products are made in North Helsinki, mainly using Finnish materials. Local production ensures proper quality and reduces the consumption of energy.” – Sakke Yrjölä
